The Back Country Horsemen of Colorado

Mission Statement
  • Perpetuate the common sense use and enjoyment of horses in America’s back country and Wilderness areas.
  • Work to ensure that public lands remain open to recreational stock use.
  • Assist the various government and private agencies in their maintenance and management of said resources.
  • Educate, encourage and solicit active participation in the wise and sustaining use of the back county resource by horsemen and the general public commensurate with our heritage.
  • Foster and encourage the formation of new Back Country Horsemen Chapters within Colorado.

Who we are...

The Back Country Horsemen of Colorado (BCHCO) is a member of the Back Country Horsemen of America (BCHA). We are a service organization working on public lands and educating the users of the back country. We work with government agencies to assist in the management and maintenance of resources on public lands. A determination to protect the heritage of back country stock use, is a primary factor of our existence. We have a proven record for effective education and service in Colorado.

In 2010 BCHCO contributed volunteer service on public lands in Colorado valued over $469,000.
  • 13,000 man-hours
  • 1,760 stock-days
  • 41,200 miles hauling stock
  • 52,290 Personal vehicle miles
The BCHCO volunteer effort contributes to the maintenance of trails used by diversified recreational groups including hikers, bicyclists, ATVs and equestrians.

Education about Leave No Trace principals and the political issues affecting the horse industry in Colorado and Nationally are critical. Many trails have already been closed to public use. We need your help now. Give your support by becoming a member of BCH or helping us start a new chapter in your area.
